Belgium Urges U.S. to Spare Millions in Contraceptives Destined for Africa

Belgium has called on the administration of United States President Donald Trump to reconsider a plan to destroy a substantial stockpile of contraceptives valued at approximately $10 million, originally intended for sub-Saharan Africa.

The plea, voiced by Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot in an interview with Agence France Presse (AFP) on Friday, follows the Trump administration’s confirmation last month of its intent to dispose of the supplies, purchased under the former U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) during Joe Biden’s tenure.

The contraceptives, including implants and intrauterine devices, are stored in a warehouse in Geel, a municipality in the province of Antwerp, as confirmed by Flanders, the Dutch-speaking region of Belgium.

Prevot expressed concern that a portion of the stockpile has been moved to poor storage conditions and refuted reports suggesting the supplies had been sent to France for incineration.

''OK, you are changing your policy. We regret it, but please at least allow what has already been purchased to reach the appropriate recipients,” - Prevot

Flanders authorities noted that incineration outside Belgium would require a “formal derogation” from the region’s ban on destroying medical waste, a request not yet received and the Flemish government remains open to dialogue with U.S. officials on the matter.

Meanwhile, reports from De Standaard and Gazet van Antwerpen, echoed by The Brussels Times, reveal the stockpile also includes over 26 million condoms and 50,000 bottles of HIV inhibitors, valued at €8.4 million, all stranded since USAID’s funding was halted and the agency dismantled in January.

The Trump administration’s overhaul of foreign aid, initiated upon taking office, has led to USAID’s dissolution and significant cuts to humanitarian funding, prompting warnings from humanitarian organizations and United Nations officials about shortages in critical supplies for hunger, disease, and family planning.

Earlier this week, a federal judge blocked the administration from letting $4.9 billion in approved aid expire unspent, highlighting ongoing tensions. Despite Belgium’s mediation attempts, including a letter from Prevot to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, no resolution has been reached, with policy differences stalling progress.
